Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

Good news travels fast, so I want to be the first to personally share some extraordinary news with you. Today, the University’s Making History Campaign reached the $3.5 billion mark — more than a year ahead of time! Thanks to your boundless participation and generosity, Penn is brilliantly ahead of the curve.

Let us pause at this memorable moment and celebrate, even as we look to propel Penn even further.

This ambitious, comprehensive campaign — Penn’s largest ever — has been driven by Penn’s most defining strength: you. Among many other elements of the Campaign to date, your efforts have so far allowed us to create 630 newly endowed scholarships; 100 endowed faculty chairs, including 21 Penn Integrates Knowledge professorships; and 16 endowed curatorships, directorships, and coaching positions. Together, these will have a huge impact on the experience that we can offer students.

Reaching this milestone catapults us forward in a profound way. Together, we will build on this incredible momentum to realize our two remaining goals: reaching the highest funding priorities for this University and its schools and centers, while enlarging your involvement with Penn. We remain committed to providing support for greater access through financial aid, recruiting and retaining eminent faculty, and building the facilities needed to support our educational mission.

We also remain committed to engaging you — our most loyal and passionate Penn family. It is your focus, drive, and commitment, hallmarks of the entire Penn community, that will bring us to the culmination of the Campaign in December 2012. From this day forward, your participation has even greater power.

Today, we are more connected than ever. I sense this every time I meet you, whether it’s on another continent or here on campus. Each time I see you, I not only see Penn — but Penn’s brilliant future.
